Whyte & Mackay Expansion Project

The Whyte and Mackay Invergordon Distillery is a key player in the Scotch whisky industry. Nestled in the picturesque Highlands of Scotland, Invergordon Distillery is celebrated for producing high-quality grain whisky.

Established in 1959, Invergordon Distillery stands out for its exclusive focus on grain whisky. Unlike many other Scottish distilleries that primarily produce malt whisky, Invergordon uses continuous column stills, enabling the efficient production of large quantities of whisky. It is also the most northerly grain whisky distillery in Scotland, located several hundred miles north of most of its counterparts in the Lowlands.

Invergordon boasts an impressive production capacity of 40 million litres per year, using water sourced from the nearby Loch Glass.

Project Overview

Challenge: Whyte and Mackay intends to double its spirit production capacity over the next five years. To support this, the blending and spirit supply operations need to be improved to manage the additional volumes and complexity that will be involved.

Scope: To help achieve this, BRIGGS was appointed to deliver an initial feasibility study to evaluate the existing site at Invergordon and develop a programme to support the processing of spirit to meet the five-year expansion plan. Following this, BRIGGS was tasked with delivering the detailed design, engineering, and manufacturing of the facility expansion. To support the project delivery, the team in Rochester, NY, contributed to process design, while Ziemann Holvrieka in Menen, Belgium, manufactured all vessels for the expansion project.

Leveraging the group’s tank manufacturing capability, this project encompasses the design and production of 26 vessels, manufactured at the sister facility in Menen, Belgium. The Port of Cromarty Firth, partnered with Briggs of Burton and Whyte & Mackay supporting this impressive distillery expansion project by receiving all 26 vessels.
